The Copper Canyon takes its name from the exploitation of this mineral in the area. The system comprises: the Sinforosa Canyon, considered the most spectacular; the Batopilas Canyon and the Bufa viewpoint; the Chínipas Canyon, the least known, housing the oldest missionary village at the bottom; the Oteros Canyon and its Rocoroybo Waterfall with three cascades; and the Candameña Canyon and Urique Canyon, which are the most visited. The Candameña Canyon is within Basaseachi Waterfall National Park and houses the Rock of the Giant, a 885-meter (2,904 ft) high vertical stone wall and two of the highest waterfalls in Mexico, Basaseachi, 246 meters (807 ft) high, and Piedra Volada, 453 meters (1,486 ft) high. In the other hand, the Urique Canyon is the best known of this area and the deepest in the country, with 1.879 meters (6,165 ft), and has a river with the same name running along the bottom.
The traditional way to access this region is by train. El Chepe train runs through tunnels, bridges, and rivers, offering a spectacular journey to venture into the mountains along precipitous cliffs. This train arrives to the Divisadero Station, a tourist area with the best viewpoints of the canyon, hotels with breathtaking views, and campsites. In Divisadero, you can admire canyons that are more than 1,200 meters (3,937 ft) deep, watch birds, see the houses of the Tarahumara people, taste regional meals, and buy typical handicrafts. If you plan a guided walk through the canyon, you can visit the uninhabited caves of La Escalera and the Piedra Volada waterfall. In Divisadero you will also find mule rides to the bottom of the canyon, visits to hot springs, and rafting tours through the emerald green waters of the Urique River.
The Copper Canyon Adventure Park is another attraction in the vicinity of Divisadero. It is one of the most impressive mountain parks in the world, nestled in an ancient area inhabited by the Rarámuri people. This park has seven zip-lines, two suspension bridges, an area for rappelling and rock climbing, hiking and biking trails, horseback rides, and a restaurant with terraces and glass floor. The park has a 3-kilometer (1.9 mi) long cableway without intermediate towers that is considered the longest in the world.
The Divisadero Barrancas area includes another station of El Chepe railway at Posadas Barrancas, 4 kilometers from Divisadero, where you can enjoy other views of the canyons and stay in hotels that overlook the valley or the canyon. Besides the natural attractions, in this region you can meet the Tarahumara or Rarámuri people and their customs. They are part of an indigenous tribe inhabiting an inhospitable environment, and are famous for their physical strength and handicrafts made of clay, wood, and textiles, and the palm baskets. You can also visit other communities in the surroundings such as Norogachi, that holds the famous Rarámuri Holy Week celebrations, and Creel, which houses the Museum of the Tarahumara Culture.

Corn and chili are other key ingredients for the regional cuisine, as well as the traditional tamales, quesadillas, red corn gorditas with potato (thick tortillas), and tortillas to accompany all kinds of dishes.
