Barranquilla offers a wide variety of dishes which have been influenced by the different cultures that converge in the area, especially the Caribbean.
The quintessential dish of Barranquilla is "arroz de lisa", a meal made of liza (a type of mullet), various vegetables, and spices, usually served in a yucca leaf. Local cuisine also includes "sancocho de guandú", a soup consisting of meat, tubers, vegetables, and seasonings; "butifarra", a sausage made with chunks of pork and seasoned with salt and spices; and "queso costeño", a Colombian type of cheese known for its salty flavor and hard consistency. These meals are served with the traditional arepas (corn cakes), being the arepa with egg the most popular in Barranquilla. Another garrison can be "patacón", green plantain chips; or rice with black zucchini.

To refresh your throat, in Barranquilla is customary to drink "raspaos", sorbets made with shaved ice; "bolis", a sort of popsicle made in different flavors; "agua de panela", unrefined whole cane sugar dissolved in boiling water; and healthy juices made of fruits as corozo, tamarind, sapote, and níspero.

To sweeten your palate, there are all kinds of desserts where coconut is present, as "enyucado", a cake made of yucca, sugar, cheese, coconut milk, cream, and aniseed; and "arropilla", made with brown sugar and coconut milk. Another typical dessert of Barranquilla is "alegría", a sweet made of sesame seeds, coconut, and brown sugar.

There are three restaurants in town distinguished for their contribution to the culinary heritage of the city, El Corral Marisco, El Tremendo Guandú, and La Tiendecita. You cannot miss the chance to try their various delicacies during your visit to Barranquilla.

July and part of August have a slightly drier climate due to Veranillo de San Juan, which brings southern trade winds with clear skies. You should bring light and comfortable clothing, as T-shirts and shorts, which will help keep you cool, as well as sunscreen and sunglasses. Remember to carry an umbrella or a rain jacket with you, and wear non-slip waterproof shoes since floods are common in some areas of the city. Dry season (December to April): these are the driest months in Barranquilla, with virtually no rain, but with relative humidity remaining a little high, at 82%. Temperatures drop a bit, with average low temperatures of 25 °C (77 °F) and average highs of 29 °C (84 °F). There are more hours of sunshine, so you should use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as well as comfortable clothing, preferably made of natural fibers as cotton or linen, which breathe naturally.

Barranquilla is located within short distance of the coasts of the Caribbean Sea, on the shores of the Magdalena River. This town was considered the gateway to Colombia during the 19th century, when the German businessman Juan Bernardo Elbers found a way to navigate through Bocas de Ceniza, which are backshores obstructing the exit channel to the sea. Two large dams were built in the 1930s to allow large ships to pass to the port on the river bank.

Due to its location, Barranquilla is the natural capital of rumba, with many nightclubs and different types of music, especially Caribbean. The city is also famous for its carnival, where you can experience the joy and warmth of its people. The downtown area is home to some major attractions, as Teatro Amira de la Rosa and Catedral Metropolitana María Reina. El Prado neighborhood, founded in 1920, is within short distance and it is listed as national cultural heritage due to its architecture.

Other attractions in Barranquilla include Centro Recreativo Atlántico, a museum with a planetarium and an interactive area for children, where they can learn about science. The zoo is a very special place, with more than 600 animals of 140 different species.
