Regional gastronomy is an exquisite fusion of pre-Hispanic, Mexican, and Spanish cultures; corn as main ingredient and local products give a unique flavor and color typical from a Magical Town

The fusion of pre-Hispanic traditions with other cultures is very common in the gastronomy of Pátzcuaro, and a clear example is the tamale stuffed with acúmara, a regional white fish; or the uchepos, a delicious tamale served with cheese, sour cream, and sauces, or with sweetened milk for dessert.

A local product prepared in different recipes is the charal, found in many restaurants and food stalls. Sopa tarasca is a kind of tortilla soup with a Purépecha style, and the corunda, is a type of tamale served with pork and beans. Carnitas is another traditional dish from the region, and the most popular are made of roasted pork loin and served with cilantro, onion, guacamole, tortillas, and radishes.

To sweeten the palate, at the portals of the main square of Pátzcuaro you can buy nieve de pasta or Pátzcuaro ice cream. There are also typical sweets as chongos zamoranos prepared with milk, sugar, and cinnamon; the delicious buñuelos with honey or brown sugar; guava and other fruits ate; milk candies, and fruits in syrup.

Traditional drinks include homemade chocolate, the famous atole, and the popular charanda, which is sugar cane distillate. To continue with your dining experience you can visit La Surtidora restaurant, offering a selection of Mexican and regional specialities, coffee, and a wide variety of national and international drinks. Another essential stop is at Joaquinita, where you can drink a delicious cup of chocolate, while you watch the grinding process in the metate.

The town of Pátzcuaro is 2,140 meters (7,020 ft) above sea level, which keeps temperatures warm during the day. Its proximity to Lake Pátzcuaro increases humidity. In general, Pátzcuaro has a subhumid temperate climate with a rainy season and an annual average temperature of 17 °C (62 ºF).

What to bring by season

Rainy season (June to September): these are the rainiest months in Pátzcuaro, with a maximum temperature of 24 °C (75 ºF) and fresh nights with 12 °C (53 ºF). There are heavy rains several days a week in the afternoons, especially between July and August, which are the wettest months. This allows to enjoy outdoor activities in the morning. You should bring a cap or hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, swimwear, lightweight clothes made of synthetic fibers that dry quickly, a sweater to wear in the evening, and an umbrella or rain jacket. 

Dry season (October to May): the climate is dry in general, with occasional rains. April and May are the hottest months of the year, with an average temperature of 29 °C (84 ºF), announcing the rainy season. Temperature ranges between 23 - 29 °C (73 - 84 ºF) during the day, while nights become very cold with an average of 3 - 9 °C (37 - 48 ºF). We recommend that you bring a cap or hat, light clothing, and sunscreen to wear during the day. In the evenings you will need warm clothing including a sweater or warm jacket, pants, scarf, and gloves.


About Patzcuaro, Mexico

Pátzcuaro is located 55 kilometers (34 mi) from Morelia, the capital of Michoacan, next to the lake that bears the same name. This city is full of architectural gems, as its historic center, where you can visit Basilica of Our Lady of Helth, the House of Eleven Courtyards, and the Temple of the Shrine of Guadalupe. Within the Gertrudis Bocanegra Public Library and the Temple of the Tabernacle, you can see works of Baroque style and a mural about the Tarascan village. The handicraft production has been an important activity in the region and you can admire and buy them in the courtyard of the Huitziméngari Palace, the rooms of the Antiguo Colegio Jesuita Cultural Center, and Museo de Arte e Industrias Populares.

One of the main tourist sites in Pátzcuaro is Vasco de Quiroga Square, next to the portals where people can enjoy the local ice cream nieve de pasta, and where you can enjoy the cultural expressions as the Dance of the Old Men, a pre-Hispanic humorous dance where participants are dressed in a typical Purépecha suit and masks. Local festivities are a good reason to visit this city.

Two important regional celebrations that attract many visitors, in the area of the shore of Lake Pátzcuaro, are the Procession of Silence during the Holy Week, where the faithful wear hoods and express their pain, and the celebrations of the Day of the Dead. These holidays blend Western and indigenous traditions, with colorful altars and offerings in the pantheons, and a procession to the island of Janitzio,  where the lights of candles and Purépecha chants are the main element.

You should also visit the surrounding area, as the magical towns of Tzintzuntzán, Santa Clara del Cobre, or Tacámbaro, and the archaeological site famous for the circular ruins called yácatas. You can also enjoy nature in Lake Zirahuén and practice flying in hang gliding or paragliding from the Estribo Hill.
